diederendirrix developed an architectural master plan for the strip along the Laan op Zuid in Rotterdam, opposite Frits van Dungons’ large project De Landtong. The plan includes four closed blocks with a dynamic profile. The southernmost volume contains 107 apartments plus commercial spaces. This is unpretentious brickwork architecture which contributes to the city without attracting undue attention and blends well with the urban architecture of the adjacent housing in the Stadstuinen to the south and the Landtong to the east. This block merges into the rhythm of the city with quayside houses opposite those of De Landtong, a roof line that connects it to the Stadstuinen and towers that form a prelude to the high buildings along the Maas. It enriches the character and identity of the city.
