Working with a narrow plot, diederendirrix designed a long, low house with a large garden for a lady with a child. The house consists of two zones - one closed towards the street and the other open towards the garden. The house has two veranda-like outer spaces; one adjoins the dining room and catches the morning sun whilst the other takes advantage of the evening sun. The verandas act like a conventional back-door allowing familiar visitors to circumvent the front door. Within the house, which has the dimensions of social housing, every effort has been made to make optimal use of the accessible space and all of the rooms are linked diagonally. The full volume of the house is made available by placing the kitchen lengthwise and also by the use of sliding walls. For example, by sliding the bed underneath the bathroom, a bedroom is temporarily removed. An open and minimalistic steel staircase leads up to the child’s room, which rises above the house like an observation post.
