The challenge is the redevelopment of an historic square in an old city district of Eindhoven. A row of flowering ash trees along the longitudinal axis of the square decide the size and scale of the new square and mark the edge of the parking zone. There is a place for bicycle parking under the trees. The outdoor café culture on the east side is enhanced by reinstating the street facade of the square. Traffic from the Willemstraat is diverted along the west side of the square and all side streets remain accessible. The parking spaces all lie at right angles to the route created. Six enormous light masts make an important contribution towards the ambiance of the area and also provide an opportunity for seating. Their special design makes reference to a household scale. The paving of the square is made up of long strips of Irish quarry stone, laid in a rhythmical pattern, which continues on into the adjoining parking strip.
