The singular design of Van Berlo finds its origin in the primary dominant shape of the ‘closed’ box - a common design for a business unit. A variety of patios were produced by hollowing out and reducing the mass at the edge of the building, thus creating space and ensuring that light and air can enter. These patios form a gradual transition to the adjacent public space and allow the interior spaces to be opened out and the surrounding external context to be brought in. The stairs in the entrance patio, which are on the street side of the building, open up the entrance to the upper level reception, presentation, administration and executive rooms. The studios are on the ground floor. Two flights of stairs and an imaginary ‘corridor from front to back’ create the internal route through the building. We chose for the industrial look of profiled aluminium plating for the facades and used a variety of materials and colours for the studios.
