MFC

Dongen

The commission consists of building a multifunctional centre (MFC) on the site of the old Saint Joseph church at the edge of the centre of Dongen. The plan includes a large hall for approximately 1500 standing and 520 seated visitors, a generous foyer with cafeteria, multifunctional rehearsal rooms for use by societies (including the music school), a separate wing for use by various welfare institutions and a sunken parking garage. An extension of the MFC will contain about 18 units in an apartment block. A garden wall running from the MFC connects the various buildings and links to the old churchyard walls. The building appears large, modern and inviting. Whilst the colossal size and scale of the new design is reminiscent of the old church, it simultaneously blends at the rear with the smaller scale residential buildings. The existing vicarage survives as part of the centre. The sizeable adjoining square serves as a terrace for the cafeteria and/or other activities. Arcades in the entrance area create a subtle transition between the public spaces and the interior.
