Part of the transformation of the centre of Tilburg is the reconstruction of the Heuvelplein – a renovation inspired by the impulsive spirit of the 1960’s. The plan consists of 10,000 m2 of public space and 1000 m2 of protected underground bicycle garaging. The urban development plan is highly detailed and has a level of sophistication which expresses the functional significance of every part. The Heuvel is dissected, cleaned and then reassembled into the triangular square it once was. A statue on a tall pedestal of Willem II stands in the centre of the triangle and the bicycle basement lies beneath. A row of lime trees with park benches set along its length forms a second historical entity. On the west side of the square a row of pollarded plane trees mark the edge of the cafe terrace area and act as a lighting structure. The shopping route flanks the square and an open bus lane cuts through its east side.
