The Grunobuurt is one of twelve districts in Groningen designated for renewal. The urban development plan proposes eight residential blocks, varying in dimension, form and building height which results in a spatial and lively street perspective. Two of these blocks were designed by diederendirrix. We deliberately chose an unusual ground floor with apartments covering different levels and this has resulted in many front doors and residential areas being situated at street level. Parking takes place in a sunken garage in an inner area. Interaction in the neighbourhood is stimulated via the central deck which serves as a communal meeting place for residents. The outer brickwork facade forms a unified whole with the neighbourhood and the inner walls acquire a soft, light appearance. Due to the stepped arrangement of the blocks, a unique top floor is created which provides space for exceptional apartments and a series of roof terraces with open views of the area.
