diederendirrix realised two compact residential buildings in Den Elzent. Each building has 8 apartments and a penthouse. The architecture meshes perfectly with existing buildings and the environment. The two blocks mirror themselves on the symmetrical arrangement of the school (without being symmetrical themselves) and fold themselves around the schoolyard with only one corner actually touching the edge. The upright windows in the brick facades are a direct reaction to the school. The wooden superstructure is in proportion to the high roof of the school building. Respect for the neighbourhood is emphasized by setting the wooden superstructure, which has the same roofline as the surrounding villas, slightly back in the row. The blocks do not confront the villas but are placed at a respectable distance. The colours are also in balance with the surroundings and harmony is achieved as a result.
