de Nobel

Leiden

De Nobel music centre lies in a complex, historical inner city building in Leiden and the careful integration of the new centre into this building provides the starting point for our design. We want the atmosphere of the 19th century industrial building to be palpable to visitors. The building is clearly organised into three zones. The entrance/foyer area is located in two of the fully retainable, valuable monument buildings in de Nobel along the Marktsteeg. There is access from the entrance/foyer to the two ground level auditoria which lie in the heart of the building. Behind the auditoria in the Lange Scheistraat there is space for the backstage zone. Although this has a separate entrance, it is also internally connected to the foyer area. The unambiguous materials chosen for the halls contrast strongly with the historical buildings and add to the iconic value of the whole.
