The design of De Kleine Dichter primary school is part of the redevelopment of Dichterswijk. The site for the new building is on a lowered square in front of the former auction hall, and it is this square which provides the starting point for the new central axis of the area. In the diederendirrix design, the classrooms are placed around the playroom on the ground floor and a terrace on the first floor. The corridor zones offer additional space for different educational activities. By removing the dividing walls around the playroom on the ground floor, we created a large, central hall for meetings and celebrations. Use of a reddish brick is stipulated for the whole area. We were, however, able to give the school a distinctive character by choosing a special brickwork bond for the facade that involves patterns of repetition and variation.
