In the centre of Breda, on the south side of the railway, the industrial brewery complex De Drie Hoefijzers is redeveloped into a remarkable inner city residential area. The complex forms the heart of the new urban development and must, therefore, undergo a renovation which acknowledges this vital, central role. The program infill requires a mix of new functions such as catering, cultural, health and welfare, residential and small-scale retail business. The old brewery has a floor surface of about 7000 m2 and, as a valuable monument, is included in the urban development plan. The old brewery hall with its stirring vats and brewing kettles is unrivalled in its beauty and historical interest. The oldest part of the brewery dates from 1887 though it was extended in various phases until 1950. In addition to the old hall, the complex also has various other rooms which are still impressively complete such as the machinery room, the kettle house and the brewing tower.
