The Brakkenstein site is situated in the south of Nijmegen. diederendirrix placed a cloister, a church, 92 apartments and four houses in this charming old monastery garden setting. We opted for a compact design so that the buildings stand freely in the park and optimum use is made of the existing environmental quality. We based the placement of the new buildings on a logically differentiated layout of the residential program. The closed monastery garden, in which remnants of the old church have a place, is now a public park which creates several new routes through the courtyard and park. We also designed a new assembly comprising a cloister, church and church square. An exceptional architectural composition is produced from the combination of interconnected and urban elements.
