The Cort Heijligerskazerne site is characterised by century old trees, variations in ground level and the barrack buildings. Just as the urban development plan follows the landscape and builds upon existing features, so it is that the quality of the existing features guides the architectural choices. Taken together, the apartment buildings and barracks form one assembly. They can be seen as pavilions with maximal orientation towards the open middle area with its rough, green terrain. In the third type of residence - the patios - the theme “living amongst the trees” is given meaning and living is oriented towards both the street and the patio. The villas have a more striking architecture to illustrate the spatial transition between the intimate residential streets and the ‘rough field’.
